Manapouri is the perfect starting point for a number of Fiordland Activities. Whatever your penchant, Manapouri has an option for you.
 

Sea/Lake Kayaking - There are 2 waterways to choosefrom for those  wishing to spend sometime kayaking from Possum Lodge - Lake Manapouri   and Doubtful Sound. Travelers have the option of guided or self guided  trips. The guided trips are the recommended option as the area  is subject to extremely variable weather conditions throughout the year. 
 
Lake Manapouri - one of New Zealand’s most spectacular lakes, Manapouri has many sandy beaches, over thirty islands, and three main arms perfect for kayaking.  The sensation of paddling along drinking form the water beneath you is   a rare experience these days.  Launch your kayak from the small cove at Possum Lodge knowing a   piping  hot shower and comfortable bed will be waiting  for you on your return.
 

Doubtful Sound - widely regarded as the ultimate Sea Kayaking destination in Fiordland, Doubtful Sound offers kayakers a true wilderness experience, with vast  waterways and secluded campsites to really get away from it all.  The best  way enjoy Sea Kayaking in Doubtful Sound is on a 2-5 day uided adventure. Paddle beneath towering peaks and plunging waterfalls, with  occasional encounters with playful Dolphins and Seals. At certain times of  the year the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin can be seen in the clear  waters of the fiord or on the rocky shoreline. All transport and equipment is  provided on guided trips, while self  guided adventures require a lot more planning.

 

Tramping/ Walking - Fiordland is the ultimate tramping destination in New Zealand with world famous walks such as the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler  Tracks, and the lesser known Dusky and Hump Ridge tracks. This area can fill your entire adventure holiday itinerary, with options of independent or guided tramping trips. For those wanting something a little less demanding Manapouri has its’ own day walks that offer some of the most spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The Manapouri Circle Track starts and finishes on the banks of the Waiau River, and is accessed by row boat from Possum Lodge. The walk takes approximately 3 hours and is best suited to people with a reasonable level of fitness. For those looking for something a bit less demanding, the foreshore walk along Lake Manapouri and the Waiau River, passes right past Possum Lodge. This wheel chair accessible walk weaves its way through pockets of native forest, with seated observation points commanding great views across the Lake from the unique”Monument” to the spectacular Cathedral Mountains.

 

Scenic Cruises - Doubtful Sound  - While Milford Sound is world famous for its towering peaks, plunging waterfalls, and hanging glaciers, Doubtful Sound is becoming revered by travelers for its long winding waterways, spectacular mountain scenery, and playful marine life. The second largest of the fiords in Fiordland National Park, Doubtful Sound provides an opportunity for travelers to venture into one of the most remote destinations in New Zealand.

A trip to Doubtful Sound is a full day adventure. The early morning cruise across Lake Manapouri is considered by some as the highlight of the day. The Lake is famous for its many islands, and magnificent Rainbows and imposing mountain scenery. This is followed by an exhilarating drive over Wilmot Pass with breathtaking views of Doubtful Sound and surrounding peaks, before descending down to the calm waters of Deep Cove.

Travelers have a choice of cruise boat catering for all tastes and requirements. All cruises cover similar paths through the fiord, with the larger boats providing buffet lunches and commentary in multiple languages, and the smaller boats a more personal experience.

During the summer months Overnight cruises are available for those wishing to experience a Fiordland sunset on the water. All meals are included, and accommodation varies from shared rooms to ensuited doubles and twins.

 

Fishing. - New Zealand is world famous for its pristine waterways and abundant trout fishing opportunities. Visitors to Possum Lodge have the option of casting a line out into Lake Manapouri or the Waiau River. For those wanting something a little more secluded we can assist in organizing fishing trips accessing either by boat or helicopter.
